Artist Statement

I am Sol Canguçu Campinho, I am from Brazil (Salvador, Bahia), where I grew up surrounded by many different cultures, merged together through colonization and immigration. I always created art casually as a kid, but started doing creative writing in 4th grade and digital art on Ibis Paint on my phone in 9th grade. I started taking art more seriously in 10th grade, when I started dedicating my time to drawing every day. Around that time was when I decided to do art as a career, as I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else. I used art as a way to express myself and relieve the stress from the grief of my father's death in 2019, and it became very important to me over time.

 

Once I got to the Savannah College of Art and Design, I selected the major Sequential Art and the minor Storyboarding, which I interpreted as a way to mix the two things I loved most; drawing and creative writing (which, at it's core, is storytelling). I love creating characters, imbuing their designs with meaning, and getting excited about their story arcs as I weave realistic interactions and trauma into fantastical worlds. I enjoy various types of genres, but tend to have a preference for those where I have more creative freedom to express the characters’ psychological experiences. I also tend to enjoy drawing action sequences, and designing creative panel layouts that break the usual expectations.

 

In the future, I hope to create comics and storyboards for animations and comics of various genres and types, but always breaking the viewer's expectations in the selected genre. I want to create comics that are compassionate representations of various different cultures and experiences, and that can be cathartic for those that have gone through difficult times. Finally, I want to just create things that are cool and exciting for those who read them, and that can make people gasp in excitement when they look at it.
